The Champions League will resume next month in a different structure to that which we have grown accustomed to over the years. There are still four second legs from the round of 16 to be fulfilled, after which the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will all take place in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon. The last eight and last four will consist of one-off matches rather than the usual two-legged ties. That changes the dynamic of the tournament considerably.
Many ties at this stage are settled on away goals, a rule which was introduced to encourage teams to play attacking soccer at opposition stadiums.
Some sides will be advantaged by the absence of a second leg, which in theory should increase the chances of underdogs pulling off upsets. Twelve teams remain at the time of writing, although that will be whittled down to eight after the first two days of the resumption. The remaining dozen contains both perennial European champions and teams that have never made it to this stage of the competition before. There is plenty to get excited about, then, with a mini-tournament in Lisbon a uniquely exciting way to determine the next kings of European soccer.
The Bundesliga champions have a lead over Chelsea going into the second leg of their last tie, and their form since German soccer returned in May is ominous: Bayern won 11 of their remaining 11 games.
City, meanwhile, have phenomenal talent to call upon in attack, but defensive issues have plagued them all season. It feels strange to label Real Madrid as underdogs, but that is the position the time European champions find themselves in. Their recent form over in La Liga shows their chances cannot be dismissed out of hand, however. Like Atalanta, RB Leipzig have never reached this stage of the competition before.
They face a tricky task against Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals, and the fact they tailed away in the Bundesliga does not bode particularly well. The prospects of Juventus and Barcelona are somewhat better. The Serie A side are down to Lyon at half-time of their last encounter but should turn the situation around, and in Cristiano Ronaldo they have one of the greatest players of all time in their corner.
Barcelona have a similar luxury in their possession of Lionel Messi, but they will need a huge improvement on the way they have performed in La Liga to even make it through to the semi-finals. Still, with Messi in situ anything is possible, and there is a chance that Barcelona might relish their unfamiliar status as underdogs. Back Atletico Madrid to get their hands on the trophy. There has been some friction of late at PSG as well, and league form has been unremarkable, but the win over Real Madrid in the group stage raised hopes Idrissa Gana Gueye could give its midfield the bite it has been lacking. Real Madrid, meanwhile, has slowly improved after a shaky start, although this will represent a major test for its reconstituted midfield.
The Zinedine Zidane-Guardiola showdown of managers adds another element of intrigue to this tie of big-spending powers. This pairing means there will be at least one surprise side in the last Atalanta edged through having lost its first three group games and with a large slice of luck, but its high-tempo pressing game can cause problems for any side, as Manchester City discovered. Valencia has improved after a difficult start to the season, but it remains only seventh in La Liga.
Atletico may sit only fifth in La Liga, but it represents a dangerous opponent for the reigning European champion. Its big problem this season has been a large number of draws—eight in 17 league games so far—something that seems the result of a lack of attacking cohesion largely caused by the major overhaul it attempted in the summer.
As players settle, it should improve, and drawing games can be a route to success in a knockout tournament that it will never be in a domestic league. Liverpool, at the moment, looks the most explosive side in the world, but fixture congestion could blunt its edge by February. It will surely have good memories upon its return to Atletico Madrid's Estadio Wanda Metropolitano, the site of its triumph over Tottenham in last season's final.
Bayern is a very difficult side to understand these days. Still, if Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry remain in the sort of form they are now, they could rip apart a Chelsea side that has looked extremely defensively suspect under Frank Lampard.
Now Chelsea manager, Lampard was a vital part of the Chelsea side that won the Champions League final against Bayern in Munich, but he may not enjoy this trip to the Allianz Arena as much.
Depay has since ruptured cruciate ligaments, ruling him out for several months. Juventus, meanwhile, has not been especially convincing under Maurizo Sarri, but it should have far too much for a club suffering a series of simultaneous crises.
Spurs has won five out of seven since Mourinho took charge after Mauricio Pochettino's ouster, but its problems at the back were exposed both by Manchester United and Bayern and could be again by the current Bundesliga leader, whose 42 goals in 15 matches are the most in Germany's top flight. A tale of two crises. Yet Barcelona is right to feel it is nothing like the side it used to be, with its midfield still vulnerable to quick counters.

To this mix comes the performances of individual players, their ambitions, mentalities, and how well the members of a team are gelling together. The analysis further creeps upon the head-to-head results of the squads involved, and the rivalry between the teams.
Several other factors are put under the microscope as well. With clubs coming from different countries, away games are even tougher for traveling contingents, and with paramount stakes involved, home teams would be further eager to utilize this advantage to the utmost. A great example for this scenario would be how Barcelona was humbled the last season at Anfield, despite being the favorites to easily go through.
